The natural state of Thermowood
Why does heat treated wood get high marks for its increased stability and durability?
Thermal process increases the stability and durability of wood. Wood consists of 50% cellulose, 23% hemicellulose, 20% lignin and 7% other organic compounds called extracts.
The thermal process removes the resin, all other extracts and binding water called OH (hydroxyl) groups from the wood. This process reduces the wood’s water absorption and increases rot resistance while reducing swelling and shrinkage.
Another factor that contributes to the high durability of wood is the crystallization of cellulose. Changes in hemicelluloses increase durability. Hemicellulose breaks down into furfural and carboxylic acid. Caramelization of lignin caused by heat causes the wood to appear darker in color.
